Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions we’re asked most often.
How much does an accountant cost in Oxford?
It depends on the size and complexity of your affairs, which is why we work on fixed fees agreed up front rather than hourly rates — you’ll always know the cost before any work starts. A straightforward personal tax return costs far less than full company accounts with payroll and VAT. Book a free consultation and we’ll give you a clear, fixed quote.
When do I need to pay my tax bill?
Self Assessment tax is due by 31 January following the end of the tax year, with payments on account (where they apply) due on 31 January and 31 July. Companies pay corporation tax nine months and one day after their year end. We flag every deadline well in advance so nothing catches you out.
What is the current corporation tax rate?
The main rate is 25% for companies with profits over £250,000. Profits under £50,000 are taxed at the 19% small profits rate, with marginal relief tapering between the two bands. Where your profits sit — and how you time investment — makes a real difference, which is exactly what we plan around.
Is it better to take a salary or dividends from my company?
For most owner-directors the answer is a carefully balanced mix of salary, dividends and pension contributions. The right split depends on your company’s profits, your other income and the current allowances and thresholds — and it changes as the rules do, so we review it with you every year.
Can you help if HMRC opens an enquiry or sends me a letter?
Yes. We deal with HMRC on your behalf, handling enquiries and compliance checks from start to finish so you only ever pay what’s genuinely due. If a letter arrives, send it straight to us — matters are almost always resolved faster with an accountant managing the conversation.
